The portions of the formation width on either side of carriageway are known as road shoulders.
It is the portion of road after the main carriageway after the white continue stripps on raod left side of each side.
The minimum width of shoulder recmmended by I.R.C. is 2.5m on each side. There are two type of shoulder.

1. Paved Shoulder
2. Earthen Shoulder.
1.Paved Shoulder is the portion of road concrete part of road after the white marking on road.
2. Earthen Shoulder is the portion of just after the concrete portion which is earthen part.
Purpose of providing Road Shoulders
i) They provided external stability to the carriageway.
ii) They provde us as an emergency lane for the vehicles requiring accidental repairs.
iii) They provide space for animal drawn vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians when a fast moving vehicle cross them.
iv) They serve as a parking spaces for vehicles in case of emegency.
v) They provide space for erecting road signals.
