Road Pavement :
A layered structure supported by the sub-grade soil to form the carriageway of a road is called a road pavement.
The basis function of road pavements is to distribute the wheel load action on the road surface through a winder area below the soil sub-grade in order to reduced the intensity of wheel load stresses.

Purpose of Road pavement
The following are the basis purposes of a road pavements :
(1) To carry heavy wheel loads of vehicular traffic and to distribute the same over a large area below the sub-grade soil.
(2) To Prevent the sub-grade soil from the adverse effects of weathering agencies.
(3) To provide a smooth riding surface.
Requirements of Good Road Pavement
A good road pavement should meet the following requirements:
(1) It should have sufficient thickness to distribute the wheel load coming on pavements stresses to a safe value on the sub-grade soil.
(2) It should be structurally strong enough to withstand all type of stresses imposed upon it.
(3) It should have adequate coefficient of friction to prevent skidding of vehicles.
(4) It should have smooth surface to provide comfort to road users even at high speed.
(5) It should produce least noise from moving vehicles.
(6) It should provided dust-proof surface so that traffic safety is not impaired by reduced visibility.
(7) It should provide impervious surface so that sub-grade soil is well protected.
(8) It should not developed corrugations.
(9) It should not cause glare in the sun.
(10) It should provide good visibility at night.
(11) It should provide a safe and comfortable riding surface under all weather conditions.
(12) It should have long life and low maintenance cost.
(13) There should be not effect of temperature variation on the pavement.
(14) It should be durable and no effect form rainy season.
