The Central Road Reseach Institute (C.R.R.I.) was set up at Delhi (Okhla) in 1950. For carry out research on various aspects of road engineering. The C.R.R.I is financed and controlled by Ministry of Surface Transport (M.O.S.T) and is one of the national laoratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (C.S.I.R.)

Functions of C.R.R.I.

The following are the important functions:

    (i) To carry out basis and applied research for design, contruction and maintenance of roads in India.

    (ii) To carry out research on traffic safety and transport economics.

    (iii) To carry out research on economical utilisation of locally available material  for construction and maintrnance of roads.

    (iv) To developed new machinery, tools and equipments for highway engineering.

    (v) To provide techncial advice and consulancy services to state governments and industries on various aspects conserning roads.

    (vi) To publish research work and other technical literature related with roads.

    (vii) To arrange training programmes and refresher courses for practising road engineers, teachers and students to acquaint them with latest techniques and developments in road engineering.
