Right of way is also known as permanent and or land width.

The area of land outside the rightof way which is tempoparily acquired for making borrow pits or soil banks is called temporary land.

Indian Road Congress (I.R.C.) has recommended the right of way (land width) for different classes of road in rural area is Given blow :

ROW as recommended

Expressway = R.O.W for Expressway is 120 meter is recommended for 6 Lane highway.

National Highway = Right of way for Natonal highway is 60 meter for 4 lane highway.

State Highway = For state highway 30 meter should be ROW.

Major district road/Other district road should be 25-30 meter ROW.

Village Road the Right of way should be acquired is 15 meter.

These are As per IRC

It is always better to acquired more land than the specified by I.R.C. standards. Highway constrution gives a fillip to the cost of land construction activity adjoining highway. It becomes difficult to acquired more land along highway at a later stage.

Factors Affecting To Acquired Land Width

(1) Category of highway, width of pavement and road margins.

(2) Height of embankment and depth of cutting and the side slopes.

(3) Dimensions of side drainage system

(4) Extra width of horizontal curves for clear sight distance considerations.

(5) Parking facilities providing along the highways

(6) Reserve land for future widening of roads.
