PERMEABILITY & IMPORTANCE OF PERMEABILITY

PERMEABILITY

The property of soil which permits the flow of water through the inter connecting voids is called permeability.

 IMPORTANCE OF PERMEABILITY :-

The Value of permeability rate is important in water conveyance and  water retention structures the continuous movement of water through the soil pores of a structure results in the removal of soil particles the removal of soil particles of soil particles result in the formation of piping which will affect the stability of the structure. knowledge of permeability is important for the following engineering problems:-

       1.    Safety of hydraulic structures against piping.

2.    Losses from irrigation canals.

3.    Seepage through dams and levees.

4.    spacing and depth of under drains for lowering the water table under a road or runway in order to improve sub-grade  stability.

5.    Draining water -logged agricultural land.

6.    Rate of settlement of structures.

Soils having good permeability rate are suitable for the following engineering problems:-

I.      Pervious shells of dikes and dams .

II.    Road and rail embankments .

III.   Sub-grades for roads .

Soils having low permeability are suitable  the following problems:-

I.      Canal beds .

II.  Imprevious portions  of earthen dams.
