The main purpose of surveying is to obtain map or plan of the area. The earliest surveying were performed only for the purpose of establishing the boundary of land. But nowadays for the purpose of designing any engineering project such as a road, railway. canal, water supply or sanitary scheme etc., an engineer would required to study , as the very first item, the features of the earth's surface in which the project is to be located and prepared a map of that area.
The successful completion of any engineering project mainly depends upon accurate surveying. Thus an engineer performing survey work must be familiar with the principles of surveying and different types of surveying and different types of surveying practices
