Compaction and necessity

Compaction :-

Compaction may be defined as the process of increasing the density of any material using force to pack the particles close together, with a reduction in air voids without any significant change in the volume of water in the soil.

Necessityof Compaction:-

Compaction of soil mass improve the engineering properties of soil.

1. High shear strength.

2. Low permeability and water tightness.

3. Reduce future settlement.

4. Increase density of soil.

5. Stable and long life span structure.

(1) High Shear Strength : Due to compaction, soil particles are rearranged

and packed closely. Therefore, shear strength increases.

(2) Low permeability and water tightness: Due to compaction air voids reduces.

So porosity decreases  which helps for low permeability and water tightness.

(3) Reduce Future Settlement: Chances of further settlement reduces with the help of compaction. Because, soil particles are closely packed together and volume decreases after compaction.

(4) Increase density of soil : Compaction increase the dry density which is responsible for increase in bearing capacity of soil.

(5) Stable and long life span of structure : Compaction helps to improve the engineering properties o soil i.e. bearing capacity, shearing strength, permeability of soil. Which helps the structure to have stable and long life span.
