IRC (Indian Road Congress) codes, Functions of I.R.C.

The Indian Road Congress(I.R.C.) as established by the central goverment in 1934 as per the recommendation of the Jayakar Committee. The I.R.C. was constituted to provide a forum for regular pooling of experience and ideas on al matters affecting the construction and maintenance of roads in India. The I.R.C. works in close colaboration of Ministry of Road Transport & Highway (MORH & H). The I.R.C. publishes journals, tandard spcifications and guidelines on various aspects of highway engineering. Presently the Indian Road Congress has become the active body to recommend specification regarding design and construction of roads and bridges.

FUNCTIONS OF I.R.C.

    The Indian Road Congress (I.R.C.) a body of professional highway engineers, has the following impotant functions :

    (1) To provied  a platform for expression of collective opinion of its members for all the matters affecting the construction and maintenance of road in India.

    (2) To suggust improved method of planning, design, construction, maintenance and administration of roads in India.

    (3) To promote the use of standard specifications and practices for roads construction, road materials and design of roads

    (4) To make laws for the development, improvement and protection of roads.

    (5) To conduct periodical meetings to discuss technical issues regarding road construction.

    (6) To publish journals, research publication, standard specifications and other guidelines on various aspects of highway engineering.
