property of concrete

PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE

1. Concrete is very strong in compression. In reinforced concrete the compression is taken by concrete and tension by steel.

2. Concrete is very durable under normal conditions of exposure.

3. Concrete can be moulded into any form. It can be poured into any mould of any size and shape, when it is fresh and it takes the shape of the mould after it sets and hardens.

4. The Coefficient of expansion of concrete match with that steel. Even though the coefficient of expansion of concrete depends on the aggregates used, its value with the common types of aggregates is around 10x10-6 to 14x10-6 per degree centigrade and that of steel 13x10-6 per degree centigrade. This is one of the reason that concrete and steel match well and reinforced concrete is durable with temperature changes.

5. Good impermeable concrete protects steel from corrosion.

6. Concrete is economical as compared to other manufacturing materials like steel is low in cost.

7. Concrete can be made of the material available locally.

8. Concrete can be manufactured to special requirements. Specials Concrete like strength, self compacting concrete, air entraining concrete, light weight concrete, coloured concrete, pumpable concrete etc. can easily made by adding certain chemical to concrete.

9. As concrete is heavy in weight, It is the ideal material for gravity structures like dams and retaining walls.
